Lessons in Vision, Strategy, and the Evolution of Affinity Insurance Leadership

PIMA's 50th anniversary is an opportune moment to reflect on the contributions of key figures who have shaped the organization and the broader affinity insurance market. Among these leaders is Garry Sullivan, who served as PIMA President in 1993. His career with Aon Corporation spanned over 40 years, making Garry's impact on the industry undeniable.

Reflecting on his approach to active leadership, Garry emphasized the importance of building industry connections, stating, "One of the advantages of being affiliated with an organization like PIMA is that no matter the size of your organization, you'll be dealing with the top people in the industry." This philosophy guided his efforts to strengthen PIMA's community and ensure that all members, regardless of organizational size, have access to the resources and networks they need to succeed.

During our conversation, Garry provided a wealth of knowledge about his time with PIMA, offering key insights from his experiences. These insights highlight the strategic decisions that have guided PIMA's growth and sustained its leadership within the affinity insurance industry to this day.

When Garry took on the role of PIMA President in 1993, the insurance industry was undergoing momentous shifts. The Clinton administration's efforts to establish a national health insurance program generated uncertainty and debate within the industry. Garry recognized the need for PIMA to be proactive in this process, ensuring that the organization could support its members.

Under Garry's leadership, PIMA took a more active role in this issue. "We had two meetings at the White House; we met with people who were involved," Garry recalled. This involvement was crucial, as it allowed PIMA to provide its members with insights directly from the source, helping them prepare for the potential impacts of the proposed national health insurance program.

The decision to engage at such a high level set a precedent for PIMA's future involvement in legislative matters. By ensuring that PIMA was not just reacting to changes but actively helping shape them, Garry helped establish the organization as a vital resource for its members during times of insurance industry transformation.

This active leadership also emphasized the importance of staying informed and involved, a legacy that continues to influence PIMA's mission today. Through Garry's efforts, PIMA members were better equipped to navigate the complexities of the evolving insurance landscape, laying the groundwork for the organization's ongoing work.

Another hallmark of Garry's leadership was his emphasis on building a strong, collaborative community within PIMA. At a time when the affinity insurance market was rapidly evolving, Garry understood that no single member could navigate the complexities of the industry alone. His goal was to ensure that PIMA provided a place where members could come together, share knowledge, and support each other in overcoming common challenges.

Garry believed that PIMA's true strength lay in its ability to bring together industry leaders and innovators. He noted, "By attending PIMA meetings and being involved on committees… you're getting an opportunity to work with the leaders in the industry." This philosophy was instrumental in shaping PIMA as a collaborative environment where knowledge and resources were shared among members.

Garry's commitment to fostering collaboration has had a lasting impact on PIMA's structure. The organization's continued emphasis on networking, shared learning, and mutual support can be traced back to the original foundations. Today, PIMA remains a place where members can unite to advance the industry.

Garry recognized that for PIMA to thrive in a rapidly changing industry, it needed to broaden its scope and include a wider array of industry players. During his tenure as PIMA President, Garry promoted efforts to expand the organization's membership, bringing in additional agencies, insurance carriers, and business partners.

Reflecting on his approach to expanding PIMA's influence, Garry highlighted the importance of having access to key industry players. He noted, "I remember being at a PIMA meeting and talking to a carrier regarding a program I was working on that I thought would be a potential fit. It just goes back to [the fact that] having them all in one place is a real asset, and you can only get that in a group like PIMA."

In expanding PIMA's membership, Garry also emphasized the importance of creating a space where industry leaders could come together to share insights and drive progress. He noted, "You look at the business today, and it's still the same thing—different players, but partnering with those people is a great way for a prospective member and a current member to really know what's going on and to improve their involvement."

The long-term effects of Garry's vision are evident today, as PIMA continues to be a driving force for growth and innovation in the affinity insurance market. His leadership in expanding the organization's reach has ensured that PIMA remains relevant and influential, providing its members with the opportunities to build industry connections and generate sustainable success.

Garry's contributions to PIMA and the affinity insurance industry are a powerful testament to the impact that strong, visionary leadership can have on an organization and its members. As PIMA continues to grow and evolve, Garry's legacy serves as a reminder that success in the affinity insurance market requires expertise, innovation, and a commitment to collaboration and continuous growth. Current and future PIMA members are encouraged to build on this legacy by advocating for progress and pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in the industry.
