PIMA History

1930

Postal Life Insurance Co of New York thrives on marketing to a targeted group of blue-collar workers and the concept of “Affinity Marketing” is born

1940

The concept of combining multiple employers to form an “Affinity Group” originates

1950

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) recognizes the viability of combining multiple employers

1960

Marketing life insurance to groups extends beyond employers to credit card holders, credit unions to department store credit card holders

1975

Professional Independent Mass-Marketing Administrators (PIMA) incorporates

1975

Holds its first meeting in Kansas City, MO

1987

President Gerald R. Ford joins PIMA at their Winter Conference

1992

Develops a position paper on national health care reform

1993

Extends its reach beyond life & health insurance to include property & casualty insurance and other payroll deducted offerings

1994

Meets with White House staff to discuss health care reform

1994

The membership elects its first female President

1995

Changes its name to Professional Insurance Mass-Marketing Association (PIMA)

1996

Provides full membership benefits to Companies & Business Partners becoming the first trade association to work across the entire value chain

1998

Changes its name to Professional Insurance Marketing Association (PIMA)

1999

Holds the first Technology & Tradeshow Conference in the market

2001

PIMA Headquarters relocates to Fort Worth, Texas

2003

The membership elects its first President from the Company Membership category

2004

The membership its first President from the Business Partner Membership category

2005

Hires a new Chief Staff Executive

2007

PIMA Headquarters relocates to Chicago, Illinois

2011

Launches Agency CEO Advisory Forums

2012

PIMA Membership exceeds $15 billion in affinity premium and 25+ million certificates in force

2015

Celebrates 40th Anniversary by unveiling the Affinity 2020 Report

2016

Creates “What Insurance Departments should know about Association Group Insurance Programs” for legislature

Hires a new Chief Staff Executive

Modifies the membership structure to provide full member benefits to all organizations in the group benefits market including non-insurance offerings
